Bourneville

The first permanent settlement at Bourneville was made in the 1790s.  Bourneville was platted in 1832 by Colonel Bourne, and named for him.  A post office has been in operation at Bourneville since 1832.  The old stone caboose is still located behind the fire station.  This was used long ago to dry out those in the town who would imbibe a bit more than they could handle.

An ancient Indian hilltop enclosure named Spruce Hill is located on the hilltop just beyond the post office.  Built primarily of stone, low perimeter walls enclose the 140-acre plateau of the mesa-like ridge top.  Spruce Hill is a prominent feature in the Paint Creek Valley, once affording grand vistas of the surrounding floodplain below that included the geometric ceremonial complexes of nearby Baum Earthworks and Seip Earthworks.
