Are you wondering why the entire town of Port Deposit is on the Historic Registry but we have new buildings like these along main Street? Let us tell you the story of this spot.
Standing here, from before 1821 until the end of the 20th century, was the McNeilly House. Hannah Eliza Reynolds started the first Sunday School of Port Deposit here with one pupil but when the class grew, moved the school to the Paw Paw Building around 1826. It later served as an inn and then during World War II, the owner at the time (Mr. McNeilly) added a top floor to provide apartments for the growing town at the time. Since the building was originally just two stories with a sloping roof, the addition made it look top heavy.
The building was destroyed in the late 1900s and these newer homes were built and occupied by 2004.
