Upper Antelope Canyon located on the Navajo Nation in Northern Arizona is the crown jewel of slot canyons. It was formed by layer upon layer of sandstone deposits, followed by the erosive forces of water and wind over millions of years. During the monsoon season in Arizona, these slot canyons still flood today just as they have for millions of years. The title of this image is Navajo and literally means ‘the place where water runs through rocks.’
The result is a dizzying array of sculptural forms, one more beautiful than the next. Cathedral-like walls soar over 100 feet. In summer, columns of light pierce into the canyon, illuminating the surrounding walls in vibrant yellows, oranges and reds. I can never seem to get enough of it because it’s always changing with the time of day and time of year. I’ve toured Upper Antelope Canyon many times and taken hundreds of photos, but my favorite image is the one hanging here.
