Roots and Bridges

Based on sentiments expressed through engagement with community elders, this design is meant to emphasize the role of children to build and grow the future of this city. The design also highlights the hope that East and West Austin will unite through the power of community and connectivity. Future generations have the power to shape our world and ignite change in our communities.

Design by Creative Action’s Color Squad.

Color Squad is a collective of teen artists who design and implement public and community art.

Song by Changing Lives Youth Theatre Ensemble member Maia, which was inspired by the design of Roots and Bridges. This song is written from the perspective of someone who is older and talking to a younger person about how they missed their chance to make the changes they wanted to in the world.

Lyrics:

Rains drops fall and tall grass grows

The rivers flow while you grow old

As the skyline grows ever high

You feel as small as the stars in the sky

But don’t be so quick to reach for that age

A child’s mind can be even more great

Innocence gone as the buildings grow high

I make some changes but they never feel right

My mind is scattered by the burdens I hold

Choices surround me, just do what I’ve been told

When I was younger, from change I would hide

I could’ve molded the world to my mind

But I was too stubborn, waiting till I was grown

I lost the chance to make the world my own

But you got the chance now so go go go

Open your eyes and come take a peek

The world’s weight is not what it seems

Though in your eyes the stars may seem small

They truly are the biggest of all
