The Courthouse Ghosts, Part 2

We know the names of some of those ghosts.

Bert Fish was a power-hungry lawyer who founded a law firm with his former professor, Cary Landis. The two of them did stints as elected prosecutors and judges. They also organized the "Courthouse Ring," a cozy political coalition that controlled most of the elections in Volusia County.

Naturally, they had adversaries, who happened to be based right across the street: Arthur Hamlin, DeLand’s first attorney, and Isaac Stewart, a rabble-rousing firebrand. Isaac often stood on the sidewalk, shouting and shaking his fist in Bert Fish’s direction. He even went so far as to put a sound system on the roof of his office building so he could blast his opponents at full volume.

Next location: Walk a few steps east on Indiana Avenue to see Bert Fish's old office.
