Christina Ramberg (1946-1995) Double Hesitation,1977

Acrylic on masonite, 49 1/2 " x 35 1/2"

Depicting the human form, and interested in conflating the stereotypes of men and women, Ramberg experimented with binding and corseting the figure in a multitude of ways eventually turning them into abstract shapes or hybrids of men and women. The sexual revolution of the 1960s was all around her and she seemed to celebrate and critique the way that consumer culture fashioned femininity. She explored the ways in which the female body has been shaped by culture through the use of clothes, undergarments, shoes, etc.

In Double Hesitation, the body seems to have been metamorphosed into an elegantly sinister cluster of precariously balanced forms covered with fabric and lace.
