The Life Story of Gotama Buddha Depicted in Murals - Station 2

The next part of the story is, Siddhartha Gotama’s father, being the King, wanted to know what his son was going to become so, he summoned advisors, or fortune tellers, to help him understand what his son was going to become. This was a common practice at the time but, if your son is born and immediately started walking, lotus flowers were blossoming under their feet, and started talking, you would not need anyone to tell you how special or unique the child is. You would already know.

Again, I think they embellished the life story of Siddhartha Gotama which is something we do not need to do, no need to embellish the life story of a Buddha. They have already done something extremely amazing during their life and all we need to do is explain what they did, as that is special enough.

Nonetheless, there were one hundred eight (108) advisors summoned to advise the King. One hundred seven (107) of these advisors explained to the King that his son was going to be a great monarch, a ruler, and a leader. That he would rule over his Kingdom and expand it far and wide. His father, the King, liked hearing this and was very proud of the predictions.

There was one (1) advisor, the last one, who came in to talk with the King and started with an apology. He explained that he overheard the other advisors and they were accurate that his son was going to be a great leader but, not the type of leader he was thinking. He was not going to be a monarch and a ruler while expanding his territory, but instead, he was going to be a spiritual leader.

His father did not like this news and was disinterested in his son being a spiritual leader. Therefore, just in case this advisor’s predication was true, the King decided to sequester his son into the palace. He kept him in the palace, attempting to “woo him into the ways” of being a monarch.

He lavished his son with gifts and a luxurious lifestyle that he thought would get him hooked to the lifestyle of being a King and therefore, he would not ever leave to be a spiritual leader. He thought if he allowed Siddhartha to go out into the Kingdom that he might get involved in worldly affairs so he kept him in the palace and gave him everything you can imagine a rich, royal father, who was the King, could give his son.

He gave him wonderful food, amazing entertainment, expensive fabric as clothing, and beautiful women bathing him, among many other lavish and luxurious gifts and benefits.
