My name is Christine Cody Parker, and I'm an artist living and working in Lakewood, Colorado. Shortly after the lockdown in New York,
I was reading about fashion magazines and their sudden absurdity in light of COVID-19 -- how many had gone to press before the virus shut down America, and would now seem garishly out of touch. At the same time, I was thinking about New York, a city that radiates with so much of the optimism found in those same pages, which was now the center of the pandemic. I pictured this hopeful young fashion intern, stunned at the sight of a flashing red Empire State Building, her city transformed overnight.

My name is Christine Cody Parker, and I'm an artist living in Lakewood, Colorado. I drew this after hearing that New York City would hold a ticker tape parade to honor healthcare workers after the pandemic. I imagined this jubilant celebration of victory over the virus, which in reality is much more elusive and would continue to rage for over a year. Instead of a victory parade, the end of lockdown was marked by thousands of protesters marching in the streets against racism and police brutality -- a different crowd than the one I imagined, but one far more compelling. When all of this started I thought about writing some things down so that I would remember them. But now I don't think anyone will forget.
