Acrylic. 2020
I began this painting after returning from a trip to Sante Fe where I was inspired by a blank wall on the side of an historic building. I found the faded paint, the texture and the imprint of time interesting and I wanted to capture these elements on canvas. When I began this painting I knew I would add a window to the scene and not just paint a blank wall. From there I composed the painting as I went, adding elements as they occurred to me. While working on this painting I imagined a person quarantined on the other side of the wall and the concept for the piece was born. The texture of the wall with it’s cracks and fading paint represents the ravages that Covid-19 has inflicted on our lives as a society. The disheveled window blind is a statement about the state of our personal lives as individuals and the whiskey and Coke and cable T.V. depict the means by which many of us occupied our idle time.
