I have a practice of making a small collage each evening in a dated journal. Usually these compositions are made from paper scraps on my desk and bits of incoming mail. During 2020 the repetition of making was a way to keep going when I didn’t always have the focus to work on larger projects. This little book was good therapy and became a real refuge for me after difficult days... trying to create a bit of balance, quite literally. I enjoyed seeing how chubby the diary became as the year progressed. Each day I posted what I made on my instagram story, partly as a way to hold myself accountable.
I wanted to review the whole year once all was done, so the pages of the book were scanned and compiled into this print that I’ve titled Momentum. The 365 images are about half their original size — you can see the actual diary in the gallery. Each horizontal bar on the compilation represents one month. The faint shadow behind the colored papers are the backs of the collages on opposite side of the pages making their presence known. They help tell a larger story of momentum found in increments during the pandemic.
I’m working on another diary for 2021 so if you’d like to see the collages as they continue, follow me @janicemcdonaldart. Thanks for learning more about my work.
