[walk up to Brookside Avenue at the corner with Cornwall Street]
These are two of the older streets in the neighborhood. Brookside Avenue was formerly known as Cooper Street and Cornwall Street was formerly known as Chemical Avenue. Present day realtors must be happy those changed!
The old names reflect the industrial uses of the area. However, things have really changed here since the 1980s. Across the street is Flaherty Park – the former site of the Aetna Rubber Factory. The new Amory Street Foundry Lofts (built in 2001) reflect the industrial character of the neighborhood but contribute to its new iteration as a residential area. Down the street at the corner of Cornwall and Amory is the Jamaica Plain Co-Housing development. Opened in 2004, it features a configuration of living where individual housing units are configured centrally to create a community. There is also communal space where the residents can cook and interact with one another.
