Take a look at this characteristically small Hawthorn tree, also known as Crataegus. Growing up to 15 feet tall, these trees are often found in dense colonies, forming intricate networks through their root suckering. Their densely packed branches provide excellent cover for a diverse array of wildlife. In spring, the forest comes alive with the beautiful white flowers that grow on this tree, each with five petals. These are followed by the abundant production of bright red fruits that resemble tiny apples. The fruits persist through the winter, offering a valuable food source for birds and small animals. Take a look at, or even touch the leaves of this tree. Notice the ovate outline and doubly toothed edges. On mature trees, the bark of this tree is grayish brown and scaly.
