Tulip Tree

This magnificent tree holds the title of North America's tallest hardwood and reigns as the state tree of Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. This is the Tulip Tree, also known as the Liriodendron tulipifera. Its exceptionally straight trunk makes it easy to spot in the forest. These giants can reach heights of 175 feet and live for an impressive 400 years. Notice the unique, four-lobed leaves with flat tops, a signature feature. This glossy green foliage provides sustenance for various birds and squirrels. The flowers, as you might guess, are tulip-shaped with a splash of orange amidst greenish-yellow petals. The fruit is a three inch long cluster of winged seeds. Finally, observe the thick, dark brown bark etched with deep furrows, a testament to this tree's remarkable longevity.
