Here we have the Blackjack Oak, also known as the Quercus marilandica. This tree is known for its short, gnarled branches and thick, leathery leaves with three shallow lobes. They're commonly found in barren areas due to their deep root systems that can tap into groundwater. Its small acorns are a food source for woodpeckers, blue jays, wild turkeys, deer, and squirrels. Songbirds also like to nest in these trees. As the Blackjack Oak matures, its bark becomes very dark with blocky, square plates divided by deep fissures.
