Sombrero Vueltiao Hat

Colombia

Late 20th century

Cane, straw

The Vueltiao, the traditional hat of Colombia, is a national symbol. The hat is woven by the Zenu, an indigenous people, and is named for its patterned rows, or vueltas.  The Spanish word vuelta means a return or lap, a reference to the way the hat is made using strips of caña fleche.
