Rehabilitation Shop

In the 1930s the Martinsburg Shops became “Maintenance of Way” shops. Maintenance of way is a term that refers to the upkeep of railroad tracks and bridges. This includes the manufacture of new frog tracks, all necessary parts for bridges, as well as the reclaiming and restoring of old railroad spikes, tracks, and railroad ties. This equipment and components would have been repurposed and reused.

In addition to the work being done by the other shops, the Baltimore and Ohio Company built the Rehabilitation Shop in 1948. The rehabilitation shop did maintenance work on vehicles and equipment used to repair the railway. This completed the shops' transition into being primarily focused on "maintenance of way".
