As a cold thunderstorm approached the coast on the afternoon of October 4th, 2021, I rushed to the Manhattan Beach Pier. The day had been mostly sunny, so I hoped to capture a sunset with some colorful clouds. But on this night, the weather turned more severe. During the first passing rain, I huddled under the pier, only venturing out between downpours.
After the sun set, a storm cell spun furiously offshore producing wind, rain and dozens of lightning strikes. I captured many images of lightning that evening, including numerous shots of the tanker being struck. In nearly all of my images, the bolts darted haphazardly off my camera frame, . . . all, except this one.
