Continue on Shrader to Carl Street, cross Carl and turn right to head south on Shrader.
At 1018 Shrader is a mature Canary Island date palm, native to the Canary Islands. The scientific name is Phoenix canariensis. This is the palm tree that lines upper Market Street, and is also found along the Embarcadero and in the median of Dolores Street. There is another Canary Island date palm at 1024 Shrader. This is my favorite palm tree in San Francisco – it has a beautiful, stately form, and it thrives in our cool coastal climate. Sadly, it is under attack from fusarium wilt, a recently introduced disease that kills any tree that contracts it. As a result, the tree is no longer planted in San Francisco.
