Sweetshade Tree

We’ll start the tour at 1000 Cole Street at the southeast corner of Parnassus Avenue and Cole Street.  On the Parnassus side of the corner in front of La Boulangerie, you’ll find a sweetshade tree – the scientific name is Hymenosporum flavum.  I remember when the tree was planted in 1995, in front of what was then the iconic Tassajara Bakery.  The flowers of this Australian tree are intensely fragrant.  This is one of the tallest sweetshade trees in San Francisco, so sadly the flowers are far above nose-level.
