Guest Rooms - History of Appleton and America

It took a long time to travel to Appleton if you were coming to visit the Rogers family from New York - where both Henry and Cremora were from - or from Wyoming - where they had lived previously.  Travel time, combined with the amount of packing needed to clothe a fashionable couple on a daily basis, meant that guests were going to stay a while - often three to four weeks.  This is particularly true for upper class women who had to bring trunks of elaborate clothes because they could change up to five times a day, depending on the social events scheduled.

So instead of incurring a sizable hotel bill, very close family, for example one of Henry's brothers and his family, would stay in these rooms.

As seen here, bedrooms still typically retained wash basins, pitchers, and chamber pots.  Guests were accustomed to using them and often preferred the privacy that a bedroom offered.  This was often the case until city water became more reliable.
