Herbert and Grace Dow purchased 10 acres of land on West Main Street in 1897, as the site of their future home. The Pines, lovingly named after the stands of tall pine trees that once stood in this area, was completed two years later, in 1899. The couple, along with their three oldest children, moved into the home that same year. Herbert and Grace went on to raise a total of seven children in this home, six of whom lived into adulthood. Many of the family’s personal belongings are still on display inside the home, including Grace’s impressive teapot collection.
The Pines is a registered National Historic Landmark with the National Parks Service, due to Herbert’s contributions to the field of Chemistry. While guided tours of The Pines must be scheduled in advance, guests are always welcome to sit on the Pines front porch and enjoy the beautiful views of the front lawn.
