Rare Books Reading Room

The La Forest Rare Books Reading Room recognizes the accomplishments of Justice Gérard V. La Forest throughout his career as a lawyer, law teacher and scholar, senior civil servant, and Justice of the New Brunswick Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada. The room houses items from the personal collection of Justice La Forest, including books, reports, articles, speeches, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other memorabilia spanning his distinguished career.

The Rare Books Room is also where you’ll find historical legal materials, such as old and rare case reporters, statute volumes, and law books. You’ll also find books about New Brunswick’s history, including a 1992 true crime paperback on Allan Legere, also known as the Monster of the Miramichi, in Stack 109.

The Rare Books Room is the only room in the library with air conditioning, so keep that in mind if you need a cool and quiet place to study. However, due to the value of the collection, we must stress that no liquids are allowed in this room at any time, and this policy is strictly enforced.
