Inland cities like Milan and Florence depended on reliable and fast boats that could freely pass along the rivers. Leonardo set down to investigate how navigation could be made faster and easier. He thought that, if certain types of boats were provided with large paddles, each turned by a man by means of a winch, the boat would sail faster than if it were moved by the traditional oars.
