St. Jerome

The next Robert Harris painting depicts St. Jerome.  St. Jerome lived from 342 to 420. He settled in Bethlehem in 386, where he lived in a cave next to that in which Christ had been born. Jerome translated the Scriptures from Hebrew and Greek into Latin. He was a strong defender of the Christian faith against false teachings. He kept a pet lion (probably to discourage interruptions) and a skull to remind himself of his mortality.
