Ink on Paper. 2020
This work is created by building "cells" of continuous lines. The composition builds organically, filling the page. The cumulation of marks arise from a meditative process. Each line responds to the lines that precede it. Each cell responds to those around it. This process of call and response in the creation of the piece forms a subtly vibrating image that provides a moment of peace, as all cells sit, balanced in constant tension with one another.
COVID-19 has impacted my work both on a practical, and deeply personal level. Practically, the loss of my studio space during the start of the quarantine limited the scale and materials used in the creation of my work. The change of scale, from working very large (9x12 feet) to 8x10 inches, allows for an intimacy which I needed in my work. The use of common writing materials, small paper, and simple l line reference the domestic space in which the work was made, and serve as a small moment of appreciation, framed away from the uncertainty of the world. Personally, this time has emphasized the need for a meditative spiritual practice in my life. Drawing works like these, provided a time of quiet relief from the anxiety seen from the constantly playing news. I also tried to allow each mark to become a prayer of compassion for those suffering more than me.
