mahogany wood, milk paint. 2020
While living in social isolation during covid crazy-time the media kept saying "we're in this together" and out my window are protests and riots in the street. 'Together' took on a whole different meaning. It felt like black, white, yellow, brown together was a much larger issue than a virus. Thus I was strongly compelled to design this piece.
This piece is one of 20 different "carved paintings" I'm making that when hung together will form a large
wall piece. Each one is a different original design that I hand carve with gouges and then paint with milk paint.
These surreal times are much bigger than Covid-19. It feels as if the earth (and especially the USA) needed a re-boot and Covid is the catalyst. It certainly has changed my design focus in addition to working smaller.
