Happy Apocalypse
The lockdown came as a shock. People reacted to it by buying absurdly large amounts of toilet paper all across Europe. For self-therapy I created this mask and to add some healing humor, I glued pink toilet paper to the surface. It’s an original pink toilet paper postmodern plague doctor‘s mask straight from the Cracowian lockdown. The flowers in the picture smelled so nicely. Spring was coming. And the tulips fit well to the style of the toilet paper mask.

Self Portrait with Blind Faith
I am a college educator, and over the past 7 years I have travelled to Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee every Monday morning and back to Kennesaw, Georgia every Thursday evening. I do this because my wife was offered a great position in Georgia, but the teaching opportunities for a 50-year-old art Professor are scarce. Due to Covid-19, I have taken the opportunity to teach via Zoom as the University ceased face to face classes. This has forced me to see teaching anew. It has also challenged me to face fears I have about grasping my artistic career by the horns. This portrait deals with the uncertainties of life that blind us to the things in front of us. The things that force us to focus on everything that we have in our grasp, grounding ourselves. It is unfortunate how many lives we have lost, but for the living, it has forced us to cherish everything we can hold on to.

This work attempts to convey the frustration that has been brought by the virus, particularly in regards of life being stagnant. Lockdown also explores the issues of being regulated and prevented from exercising freedom.
