Talia Swartz Parsell - "Time For Change"

My piece "Time For Change" is an abstract, geometric landscape that was inspired by the beautiful change of seasons here in Colorado and the hopeful change of political power with the upcoming election. This has been a long four years with a leader that has spewed hate, racism, misogyny and outright lies during a time of deep crisis with this global pandemic. Our country feels more divided and devastated than ever and this piece is about the hope that is crucial for change in our lives, our country, and getting this virus under control.

The coronavirus has changed my art practice in a number of ways but specifically it has forced me to spend a lot of time painting with my 5 year old next to me. I set him up an easel in my studio so he can paint with me during his breaks from remote school. I'm having to wear two hats during my studio time now, helping teach my son Kindergarten and also attempting to have as much presence with my paintings as I can. While it was difficult at first to jump in and out of focus, I realized that sharing my art space with him has been an incredible bonding time for us...something I may never have experienced without school shutting down and this pandemic taking over our lives.
