Hi, and welcome to the outdoor environmental art exhibit titled LandMark. My name is Kalliopi Monoyios, I’m one of the co-curators along with Anna Kaye. The sculpture you are standing in front of is by Denver-based sculptor, Yoshitomo Saito. Saito’s work often references natural materials like branches, fruits, and seeds. We invited Saito to talk about his work for our audio tour and this is what he says:
“My name is Yoshi. I'm 63 years old and a bronze sculptor based in Denver. I cast bronze, weld and finish my sculptures all by myself instead of relying on commercial foundries to realize them. I've been exercising this manner of creative operation for the past 35 straight years.
The pair of vertical bronze sculptures ‘Bamboo Boy & Bamboo Girl’ might have some figurative implication in its geometrical abstraction. It is a coincidence but in the park setting where people gather, I find it appropriate. Why do I use the image of a bamboo pole? That is because I want to remind Coloradans of and recommend the use of the rather exotic but locally available material bamboo because it’s very eco-friendly and esthetically pleasing. I don't deny the fact that it's coming from my Japanese cultural taste either.
